Day 1 | May 30 2010

…and it begins

My birthday! I made it and I was on my way over the ferry. Took sometime to reorganize the van, ate a banana and grabbed some more zzz’s Once there, I found my way to Willows Beach where the festivities began with the Muscular Dystrophy walk. I was so happy to see my Mum and my sister who came down from Nanaimo to spend the day with us. Then my good friend and team mate Twyla, who is still supporting me on the road showed up and introduced me on microphone to kick off the event. Our friends with New Reality arrived with the PALs (portable accelerated learning device) and set up a small tent and shared the wonders and magic of this technology. My Mum tried it for her fibromyalgia and experienced terrific results!

The walk itself was a 3km stroll around the park. Lovely indeed. Met and connected with some great people with and without MD and was truly touched by the positive outlook and feedback I received. I rolled out of the park with fire fighter escort out to there station where we paused to re group and re load our van, which is stuffed to the brim.

Later, my Mum and sister took Twyla and I out for a birthday dinner. Then we headed to Mile 0 where I spent some time gazing at the Terry Fox statue remembering how impactful it was 17 years ago when I first saw it in Ottawa. We stayed that night in Nanaimo and got some logistics handled on my chair.
